Christian Furr, Green Rose 2017

In 2017 Furr was approached by Tim A Shaw and Niamh White of Hospital Rooms to create some artwork for the Snowfields Mental Health Adolescent Unit at the Maudsley Hospital, London. Hospital Rooms is a mental health charity that believes in the enduring power of the arts to instil value, dignity and wellbeing in people. Their aim is to disrupt the barriers that limit access to art and culture for people using mental health services.

‘I think what Tim and Niamh are doing with Hospital Rooms is so inspiring. They are going in and working with artists/staff and patients to make the places where the patients stay and the staff work in the Mental Health Units – better to be in.

Sometimes issues with Mental Health can be a phase in someones life and sometimes it can be more permanent. It can be challenging for everyone involved.

What do you think the spaces look like where the patients and the staff spend time? Sometimes they are not so inspiring. Hospital Rooms is changing that. I believe, like Tim and Niamh, that creating an aesthetic healing space is imperative in the overall process.

Many famous creatives through history have battled with mental health issues and in some cases their issues were linked uniquely to their creative spur.

I totally believe in the power of colour to alter mood for instance

If Art can help change things I hope my own work for Snowfields will help to both raise awareness of what I have talked about and to change the governments understanding of the need for proper funding for adolescent mental health services from childhood to young adulthood – as long as it is needed. I think the work that the doctors at the Maudesley and other specialist units do – and Tim and Niamh’s initiave is amazing and I am thankful as an artist to be part of it.’
